On getting out of your own head The practice of taking time out of your day specifically to think about others whether or not you are with them seems to be helping you in a variety of ways. For one, you are actively thinking about others and practicing empathy, a skill in which you need practice. You are wishing them well in their daily lives despite the fact that it has zero bearing on whether or not your day will go well. Additionally, since you’re spending time thinking about others, you’re not thinking about yourself. This may be the most important part of the practice. You cannot be worried about your own wellbeing at all time. This is a way to constantly recognize your place in the world and realize that all of your decisions are made in light of other people. Your goal is to help others and do for others. Never forget that.
On goals, short-term Daily, you wake up with a new sense of purpose and a new set of things to accomplish. You are presented with new problems, challenges, and tasks that must be resolved by the day’s end. These are the truly short-term goals, as they come and go in a matter of hours. Where do these goals come from? In the last couple of days, I’ve noticed that you struggle to find short-term goals to attack. You don’t know what the next 24 hours looks like, and then you are forced to find something to do so as to not waste your time. That is good, especially if you’re defaulting to edifying activity such as reading, but not good if you are simply failing to visualize the path you need to be on.
On desired future states To find out or at least partially discover what work you should be performing today, you have to take a long-term perspective and recognize your desired future state. Where do you want to be? It’s very difficult to solve this problem by only looking at today. On the other hand, if you desire a certain career, with a certain amount of income, and to live in a certain place, then you have some sort of guiding light to navigate to. Take time to stop and write down where you want to be in the next year, three years, and five years. Reduce those larger goals down to smaller, more immediately achievable goals in the short-term. Work backwards, and you will discover what your short-term goals should be.
On systems You do much better throughout your day when you are operating according to a system. That is, rather than arbitrarily decide to put your phone or laptop away, you have a system to make you put it away. This makes the desired action an expectation that you have to live up to. Remain on this path, and don’t let anything get in the way of the systems that you have established to keep you focused on the work that needs to be done.
