Sermon

January 4, 2020

to c:

i will never find anyone better than
you
i will never love anyone more than
you
i will never want anyone more than
you
and those are not promises

to s:
you are one of few
but
still one of many
and i love you more
than
i’ve loved
most of them
but i would be lying to you
if i said
you had
a
chance
against

it is not a competition

to the congregation:

you must think
horribly
of me
for being in this predicament
one, leaving behind
the one i love,
two, being a womanizer
in a new city
with no regard even
to my own emotions.
but so goes it.

congregation responds:

it’s okay, diego
you’re an asshole
but you have thirty seconds left
before we
play the organs
and
kick you off stage.

to the congregation:
to c:
to s:

grant that i may
not so much seek to be consoled as to console
to be understood, as to understand
to be loved, as to love—

grant that i may
make it home safe on
this bus and then
later,
that train,
so that one day
c
can come home
to me
and i
to her.
