Slacks

i used to work
in the corner
of an old office,

next to my desk,
a structural
pillar that my
elbow hit
every time i
turned right.

behind my chair,
a dumb twenty-something
with a high-pitched voice
and low intelligence;
it’s one thing to
work, and it’s another
thing to work at nothing.

one day, though,
we bonded over
the nike shoes
twenty-something
was shopping for,
all-white
air-force 1s.

i bought a pair
the next week,
delivered them to
the office, unboxed them
behind the big
ugly pillar, put them on,
and kicked down
the door
to the next office
and started anew.

dumb twenty-something
had the same
shoes
but
didn’t
kick
any
doors
down.
