To find out or at least partially discover what work you should be performing today, you have to take a long-term perspective and recognize your desired future state. Where do you want to be?
It’s challenging to solve this problem by only looking at today. On the other hand, if you desire a particular career, with a certain amount of income, and to live in a specific place, then you have some guiding light to navigate toward. Take time to stop and write down where you want to be in the next year, three years, and five years. Reduce those larger goals down to smaller, more immediately achievable goals in the short-term. Work backward, and you will discover what your short-term goals should be.
