The practice of taking time out of your day specifically to think about others whether or not you are with them seems to help you in a variety of ways. For one, you are actively thinking about others and practicing empathy, a skill that you need to practice. You wish them well in their daily lives even though it has zero bearing on whether or not your day will go well. Additionally, since you’re spending time thinking about others, you’re not thinking about yourself. This may be the most crucial part of the practice. You cannot be worried about your own wellbeing at all times. This is a way to continually recognize your place in the world and realize that all of your decisions are made in light of other people. Your goal is to help others and do for others. Never forget that.
