Read every book with the understanding that it’s someone else’s favorite book. In this way, you’ll become more open to the value that it might provide. That’s not to say you’ll accept every opinion you come across inside as if it’s gospel, but you should be more open. If someone else truly loves this book, ask yourself why. What value did they find in it, and how can I see that same value? Do this with more than just books. Everyone believes what they believe for a reason, good or bad. Remember, those who are wrong think they are right. (So do you, and you’re wrong on more things than you know.) You have to be open first to understand why others believe what they believe, and then you will learn from them. You may not persuade them to join your side, and that’s not your goal. Your goal is to understand and discover some sort of truth with every encounter.
