As you read in a book* the other day, privilege is most effective when you give it to yourself. You might even be able to argue that privilege is only valid when you’ve decided you have it. You might call it an entitlement, and in some sense of the word, that’s what it is. You have to believe that you have a right to be in the rooms and places that you will end up in the future. That’s not to say that you don’t have to work hard or you get to walk into a company and take over with no explanation. But you should step in with a healthy attitude of confidence rather than being unsure about yourself and whether or not you deserve to be in a room. Failing to believe you’re worthy of being where you are is a great way to prove yourself unworthy. Believe in yourself a little bit!
*The book mentioned here is Black Privilege by Charlamagne Tha God.
