On responsiveness

The only reason you want to respond to your emails and texts is vanity. You want to be loved by the people who reach out to you, so you try to respond as soon as possible.

What happens if you don’t answer? Will these people banish you from their lives? Of course not. And if they do, you’ve got a problem on your hands because they don’t seem like great friends. While you should be responsive and pay attention to the people who care about you, you have to ask yourself how much of your time is yours. If none of it is yours because you exist at the whims of other people, then you’re not living.*

*The question, How much of your time is truly yours?” comes from Seneca’s On the Shortness of Life, which is an amazing short read about, you guessed it, the shortness of life.
